Description

The Church of St Thomas is a parish church that dates back to the 13th century, with additions from the 16th century, late 18th century, and alterations in the 19th century. It is constructed from squared sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs. The church includes a western tower, nave, and chancel.

The tower consists of three stages, supported by angle buttresses, and has a plain parapet with corner obelisks. The pointed west doorway is framed by two chamfered orders and a moulded hood. Above the doorway is a reset 16th-century two-light window with cusped heads and panels above, set within a rectangular moulded surround, of which some parts are original. The belfry stage has single pointed louvred lights on all four walls. Attached to the north side of the tower is a 19th-century vestry featuring a two-light window on the west wall.

The north wall of the nave has two sets of paired lights, while the chancel's east window, dating from the 16th century, has a concave chamfered reveal and a four-centred arched head with a hood and three cusped lights. The south wall of the nave mirrors the north wall, with paired lights that all have chamfered surrounds and moulded square hoods.

Inside, the tower and chancel arches are from the 13th century and feature single chamfering with moulded octagonal responds. Notable fittings include early 18th-century altar rails with turned balusters and a late 18th-century panelled pulpit with a tester. The tub font is an early 12th-century piece adorned with two orders of cable moulding around the top, while all other fittings date from the 19th century.
