Lodge And Gateway, Eastern Necropolis, 1264 Gallowgate, Glasgow

The Eastern Necropolis, established in 1847 on the grounds of Janefield House, is a cemetery enclosed by stone-built walls, some of which are part of the original policies. The site features a lodge built around 1860 and a gateway. It contains an extensive series of 19th and 20th-century monuments, including the pedestal of a monument erected in 1882 to Duncan Livingstone (1808-1870), a significant Gaelic poet known for his opposition to the clearances and the destruction of Gaelic culture. There is also a monument to Alexander Cruikshanks, who was accidentally killed while playing as a goalkeeper for Strathclyde FC against Rutherglen Glencairn FC on June 12, 1932, at the age of 24.

The lodge is a single-storey structure made of painted ashlar, featuring mixed classical details. It has an L-plan front facing the driveway, a pedimented gable with a round-arched Italianate three-light window, and an anthemion finial. A continuous string course runs at the impost level, and the lodge is topped with a slate roof.

The gateway has a curved design and includes six square painted ashlar piers with shaped caps, along with decorative cast-iron gates and railings.
