Description
St Leonard's Parish Church, located on King Street in Perth, was designed by W M Mackenzie and constructed between 1834 and 1836, with later additions by James Smart in 1891. This former church has a rectangular plan and features a Neo-Classical style, topped with a pedestal and a rotunda inspired by the Lysicratic Choragic Monument. The principal (east) elevation is finished in polished ashlar, with the lower section channelled, while the sides and rear are constructed from rubble.
The east elevation includes steps leading up to three tall, narrow, two-leaf timber doors set in round-arched doorpieces, each with fanlights and moulded over-arches. Above the doors, horizontal recessed panels indicate an attic space. A cornice and blocking course complete the top of the elevation. The roof features a central pedestal flanked by swept consoles with scroll carvings, and above it is a blocked rotunda supported by Corinthian columns, topped with a moulded cap and a floral-type finial at the apex.
The north and south side elevations display two tiers of fenestration, with round-arched windows in the upper tier. The rear (apse) elevation features a rose window flanked by full-height round-arched windows in the canted angles.
Inside, the church was recast and extended in 1891 with the addition of an apse. Slender cast-iron columns support a D-plan gallery, which now has a later suspended ceiling. The upper level contains raked fitted timber pews. The stained glass is predominantly from around 1836, featuring resurrection scenes on the left wall, while the apse contains later geometric patterned glass, likely from 1891.
