Description

The Ancaster Hotel, located at 9-13 James Square in Crieff, dates from the late 18th century and features late 19th century details. This four-storey, four-bay hotel includes shops on the ground floor. The exterior is characterized by bull-faced ashlar bands with contrasting stucco details, ashlar quoins, and raised margins. A cornice runs along the ground floor, and there is a keystoned, round-headed door. Each window features pedimented heads with a thistle motif on the tympanum.

On the south elevation, there is a modern shop positioned off-centre to the right on the ground floor. The right bays feature a consoled cornice over a deep-set panelled timber door and a modern fixed display window on the outer right. To the left, a traditional shop has an inset centre door, flanking fixed display windows, and a deep fascia, with a round-headed door on the outer left. The upper floors have regular fenestration, with triangular-pedimented windows in the outer bays on the first floor and a broad stucco panel inscribed with 'ANCASTER' adjoining the centre bays of the second floor. All second-floor windows are semicircular-pedimented, and the smaller third-floor windows are positioned just below the eaves.

The glazing patterns on the right bays at each floor consist of 6-pane and plate glass, while the left side features modern windows. The roof is covered with grey slates and includes a traditional rooflight.
