8 Old Scapa Road, Kirkwall

8 Old Scapa Road in Kirkwall is a house built in the earlier to mid 19th century. It is a two-storey, three-bay symmetrical house with a square plan. The building features a roofless former lectern doocot projecting from the northeast angle and a lean-to garage extending from the southeast angle. The exterior is constructed of re-pointed squared and snecked rubble, with an eaves course and block cills beneath the windows.

On the northwest (principal) elevation, there is a deep-set timber panelled door with a two-pane rectangular fanlight located in the central bay at ground level, with a window above it on the first floor. Each bay on this elevation has a window on both floors. To the outer right, there is a wide doorway with boarded two-leaf doors leading to the single-storey garage.

The northeast (side) elevation has two bays, with a window on each floor in each bay. The southeast (rear) elevation is five bays wide, featuring a tall central stair window flanked by two narrow lights on the first floor, with a window in each bay on both floors.

The house predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, along with two evenly spaced rooflights on the southeast pitch. The roof is covered in grey slate with red clay ridge and angles, and there are paired, tall rubble, corniced stacks. The rainwater goods are predominantly uPVC.

The interior was not seen in 1998. The property is enclosed by low squared rubble boundary walls topped with a ridged ashlar cope, decorative cast-iron railings, and a central cast-iron gate. The rubble walls surround a large rectangular garden at the rear.
