Description
6 London Road in Dalkeith is a house built in the later 18th century. It is a two-storey, four-bay structure, with the fourth bay on the right added later. The building is constructed of rubble, with the north elevation squared and coursed. It features raised margins that are painted on the ground floor of the north elevation, along with angle margins, a deep base course, a cill course at the first floor, and an ovolo moulded eaves cornice.
On the north elevation facing London Road, there are steps leading up to a central doorway, which is surrounded by a wrought-iron balustrade. Above the door, there is an open pediment supported by decorative consoles, framing an architraved doorcase that contains a panelled door and a two-pane fanlight. To the outer right, there is a large garage door with a wooden lintel. The fenestration is regular on both the ground and first floors.
The east elevation has windows at both the ground and first floors to the right. The west elevation features chamfered reveals on two windows at the first floor. The building has plate glass glazing in its sash and case windows, and there are two slate-hung piended dormer windows with a small-pane glazing pattern on the south pitch.
The roof has coped skews and rope-detailed skewputts with pedestals, possibly for urns, on the north side. There are rendered stacks, one at the gablehead to the east and another at the former end gable to the west. The main roof is covered with purple slates, while the half-piended roof of the later bay is covered with grey slates.
