Description

8 London Road in Dalkeith is a two-storey, nine-bay terrace building dated 1827. It is constructed of rubble stone, with the north elevation squared and coursed, and features ashlar dressings. The base course is situated on falling ground, with a band course between the floors and an eaves course at lintel level. The windows have raised cills, and the door jambs are stop-chamfered.

On the north elevation facing London Road, the door for No. 11 is located in the penultimate bay to the left, while doors for No. 10B and No. 9 are found in the bays to the left and right of the central fenestrated bay. There is also a door in the outer right bay. The fenestration is regularly arranged on both the ground and first floors, with two later tripartite windows in the outer left bay and the third bay from the right. A band course to the right is inscribed with "Porteous Place 1827."

The south elevation features nine asymmetric bays, with two curved forestairs that have iron balustrades leading from the former pend entrance to first floor doors in the penultimate bay to the right and in the bay to the left of the center. The fenestration here is irregularly sized and disposed.

The southwest corner of the building is broadly canted and includes two small windows—one on the first floor to the left and one on the ground floor to the right. The east elevation is blank and has tie plates, while the west elevation is also blank.

The building has a 12-pane glazing pattern in its sash and case windows, with some plate glass glazing at the rear. The east elevation features coped skews with a skewputt to the north and mutual skews. There is a gablehead stack on the east side and two regularly spaced ridge stacks, with the middle stack rendered and lined. The roof is covered with grey slates.
