Description

28 Newmills Road is a villa built in the earlier to mid-19th century. It is two stories high and has three bays. The east elevation features stugged ashlar, while the other sides are constructed from rubble, with the porch bay rendered. The building has ashlar dressings, flush margins with droved tails, raised cills on the east and south elevations, and a base course. There is an eaves course and a cornice on the east side.

On the east elevation, a later full-height flat-roofed porch bay is set forward at the center. It has a panelled door with a three-pane fanlight above it, and a window on the first floor to the east. There is a slit window at ground level on the south return, and regular fenestration in the outer bays.

The west elevation features a stair window at the center, regular fenestration in the outer bays, and a blind window on the first floor in the right bay. There is a coal hatch at ground level between the left and center bays, and an outbuilding is attached to the left corner.

On the south elevation, there is a window to the right at ground level and windows to the left and right on the first floor.

The north elevation, facing Newmills Road, has a window to the left and a blind window to the right on the first floor. There is a piend-roofed addition attached at ground level with a door to the east.

The villa features a 12-pane glazing pattern in its sash and case windows, and the roofs are covered with grey slates. Shouldered wallhead stacks are located at the center of the north and south elevations.

Inside, there is an encaustic tiled vestibule floor, an arch in the hall, and a winding stair to the right with a cast-iron balustrade.

The outbuilding is made of rubble with a steeply pitched piend roof and sash and case windows. It is attached to the northwest corner of the house and has a window to the south, a tall piended dormer window breaking the eaves to the west, and a small dormer window on the east pitch.

The boundary walls consist of a flat coped rubble wall to the north, with a bolection-moulded gateway in the wall to the west leading into a court between the outbuildings, and another gateway to the east with an overthrow leading to the garden.
