Description
The Militia Barracks at Elmfield Court in Dalkeith was built around 1864. It is a two-storey, five-bay building constructed from squared and snecked rubble with ashlar dressings and raised tailed margins. The building features panelled doors and two-pane fanlights.
The east elevation, which is the principal facade, is nearly symmetrical. It has a door to the left and a window to the right at the center, with a bipartite window on the first floor. The remaining bays have regular fenestration, with a door flanking to the left in the bay to the left of center and another door flanking to the right in the bay to the right of center.
The west elevation, facing Gibraltar Road, has six bays. It features a window on the first floor and two windows at ground level in the piended outer bays. The remaining bays have windows on the first floor and various openings at ground level.
On the north elevation, there is a sympathetic modern single-storey piend-roofed wing attached, which includes a bipartite window to the north and two windows to the east and west.
The south elevation has a window to the right on the first floor. The building has an 8-pane glazing pattern in its sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, featuring a piend and platform design with deep eaves. There are corniced stacks, a central stack, and a shouldered wallhead on the north and south sides.
Additionally, there is a semicircular coped rubble wall along Gibraltar Road.
