Description
2B Lothian Street in Dalkeith is an earlier 19th century tenement that incorporates some work from the late 18th century. It is a three-storey, three-bay building featuring a semicircular stair tower at the rear. The structure is built of rubble, with the west elevation squared and coursed. The ground floor showcases earlier masonry, while the stair tower is harled. The building has raised droved margins and raised cills on the east elevation, along with base and eaves courses, and a band course between the ground and first floors.
On the west elevation, facing Lothian Street, there is a corniced door at the center with a raised surround and a lintel inscribed "1775." The door is accessed by two steps and features a letterbox fanlight. The fenestration is regular across the ground, first, and second floors, with decorative wrought-iron window guards on the first and second floors. The rainwater goods are located to the left of the center bay.
The east elevation has a stair tower with a cat-slide roof that is slightly out of line to the left of center. There are doors and windows at the first and second floors to the north. The outer bays have regular fenestration, while the ground floor features narrower windows. A small window is positioned to the left of the bay on the right at ground level, and the right corner is chamfered at the ground.
The north elevation is blank, while the south elevation has a mutual offset flue shared with the adjoining single-storey cottage, No 2 Lothian Street. The sash and case windows predominantly have a plate glass glazing pattern, although the ground floor windows have a replacement glazing pattern. The building features coped skews, rendered and lined stacks at the gable ends to the north and south, and is covered with grey slates.
