Description

Late 19th century. 2-storey, 5-bay assymmetrical commercial building. Squared and snecked bull-faced masonry; ashlar dressings. Droved rybats. Chamfered reveals, stop-chamfered above cill. Moulded string course between floors. Pedimented dormerheads.

W (LOTHIAN STREET) ELEVATION: section (4B) to right: original vehicle entrance with wooden doors to left; 2 dormerheaded windows above at 1st floor, segmentally-pedimented to left. Segmentally-pedimented dormerheaded window at 1st floor in bay to right; blocked window at ground. Section (4A) to left: door at centre; Venetian window at 1st floor with gabletted dormerhead and ball finial. 2 windows to left including bipartite window at far left; 1 window to right. Single dormerheaded windows flank Venetian window at 1st floor, segmentally-pedimented to left.

N ELEVATION: adjoined to Nos 4 Lothian Street and 2-6 Newmills Road (see separate listing).

E ELEVATION: L-plan. Variety of boarded openings at 1st floor; original hoist to left return. Mid-floor canopied section extends along elevation; corrugated-iron roof.

S ELEVATION: obtusely canted. 4 boarded windows at 1st floor.

4-pane glazing pattern in sash and case windows, 2-pane in bipartite lights; semi-circular head of Venetian window blocked. Grey slates. Moulded eaves gutter. Original rainwater goods piercing string course.

E RANGE: later U-plan, 2-storey brick range extends from E elevation of 4B. Former stables, loose box and van sheds with storage above. Variety of openings including dormerheaded loft doors and windows. Plain brick elevation to S; rendered E elevation, various openings including 2 1st floor piended dormer windows. Tall, flat-roofed, single storey former plant repair shop to N (Newmills Road). Full height corniced outer colums; 2 inner colums flank central door; timber panelled door; fan lights. Block infill either side of door; glazing at upper level remains. Former occupants sign within frieze remains; 'John Monteith Ltd'. Hoist at rear. Section to right connects to yard entrance; pair of chamfered square-plan gatepiers; conical coping stone remains to E (pier built upon to W); pair of decorative iron gates. Single storey section to right adjoins 2-6 Newmills Road.

COURTYARD: stone setts to courtyard; missing/covered in places.
