Description
2 Lothian Street in Dalkeith is an early 19th-century single-storey, three-bay cottage, accompanied by a one-and-a-half storey outbuilding. The cottage is harled with pantiles and features slightly raised and painted margins, along with a painted base course on the west elevation.
On the west elevation facing Lothian Street, there is a door with a four-pane strip fanlight at the center and a window in each of the outer bays. The south elevation, facing London Road, has a window to the right. The east elevation includes a modern flat-roofed shed to the right and a taller outbuilding attached to the left. The north elevation is connected to No 2B Lothian Street, which has its own separate listing.
The cottage has a four-pane glazing pattern in its sash and case windows, although the window on the south elevation has replacement glazing. There are coped skews on the south side, a gablehead stack to the south, and a shared harled flue to the north, offset on the south gable of the neighboring building, No 2B Lothian Street.
The outbuilding, which was formerly a dairy, has a gabled west elevation that connects to the east elevation of the cottage on the left. The south elevation is continuous with the lower cottage and features a loft window to the left under the eaves, along with a low, painted brick screen wall to the right. The north elevation is blank, with a low wall running north attached to the left. The east elevation is gabled, featuring a boarded door to the left and a modern lean-to to the right, which has a door on the north side and a window on the east side. The east elevation also has raised skews.
