Description
Spence's Square at 74 Victoria Street in Kirkwall is an 18th-century building that incorporates earlier elements and has undergone later alterations. It consists of a small terrace of three houses, arranged in a rectangular plan and two stories high, with an irregular arrangement of windows. The terrace features a crow-stepped gable facing Victoria Street, forming the south side of a courtyard known as Spence's Square. The ground rises to the east, where there is a slightly taller two-bay group. Numbers 1 and 2, which are listed separately, form the north and east sides of the square. The exterior is harled with cement dressings and has plain margins around some openings.
On the north elevation, the principal facade has a four-bay group on the right. There is a deep-set, part-glazed timber-panelled door at ground level, offset to the right of the center, with a window above it on the first floor. To the right, there is another ground-level window, and a non-aligned window above it, offset to the outer right. A stair window is located in the left bay. Additionally, there is a window set in a square-headed recess at ground level, with a possible former doorway above it in the penultimate left bay. A deep-set door beneath a linking walkway is found in the outer left bay, with a window above it on the first floor. The left side features a two-bay group divided horizontally by an access walkway, with a timber-panelled door at ground level in the center, a window in the close to the right, and a timber-panelled door above it on the first floor. There are windows at each floor in the left bay.
The west elevation, facing Victoria Street, has a two-bay gabled group with a full-height single bay lean-to projection on the right. The left two-bay group includes a ground-level window in the left bay, and a window at each floor in the right bay, topped by a gablehead stack. The projection on the outer right also has windows at each floor.
The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof, which has been replaced, is traditionally covered with graded stone tiles and has a stone ridge. The gablehead and ridge stacks are harled and corniced, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interiors were not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
