Description
53-55 Alfred Street in Stromness is a 19th-century town house with later alterations. It is a three-storey, three-bay building with a symmetrical rectangular plan and a rectangular-plan wing at the rear. The exterior is harled with cement-painted margins around the openings.
On the east (principal) elevation, there is a deep-set boarded door at the ground level in the central bay, with a window above it on each floor. Each flanking bay also has a window on each floor.
The south (side) elevation features a gable wall with a single window set to the right at the first floor, and a gablehead stack above it.
The windows are timber sash and case, with 9 and 12 panes (4 panes on the side). The roof is covered with old Orkney grey slate, featuring a stone ridge, stone skews, and tall gablehead stacks that are shouldered to the north. There is a decorative octagonal can on the south side and fluted rectangular cans on the north side. The rainwater goods are made of uPVC.
The interior was not seen in 1997.
Additionally, there is a garden wall made of random rubble with a rubble cope extending south from the south elevation. It includes two-leaf boarded gates set to the right, abutting the south elevation.
