51 Alfred Street, Stromness

51 Alfred Street in Stromness is an early 19th-century building that has undergone later alterations and additions, including dormers added in 1996. It is a two-storey, five-bay terrace, featuring a three-bay, near-symmetrical house on the left and a two-bay, asymmetrical house on the right. The left side (number 51) is constructed of roughly coursed rubble with cement cills, while the right side (number 49) is cement-rendered and lined with painted margins around the openings.

On the principal elevation, number 51 has a modern, part-glazed timber panelled door located centrally at the ground level, with a blocked doorway immediately to the left. Above this door, there is a window at the first floor. Each flanking bay features a window at both floors, with a piended dormer above. Number 49 has a part-glazed boarded door in the left bay at ground level, with a window above at the first floor. There is also a window at each floor in the right bay.

The buildings predominantly feature 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with number 49 also having 4- and 8-pane windows and 2-pane windows in the dormers. Number 49 includes large modern rooflights on the east and west pitches. The roof of number 49 is covered with old Orkney grey slate, while number 51 has replaced grey slate. Both buildings have slate on the dormers, coped rubble end and ridge stacks, plain red clay cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods on number 51, while number 49 has uPVC. The interior was not seen in 1997.
