Description

Gartsherrie Academy, located on Academy Street in Coatbridge, was rebuilt in the 1870s after a fire but is said to incorporate elements of the original Gartsherrie Academy, which was constructed by the Bairds of Gartsherrie in 1845. The school features classical ornamentation, primarily with Italianate arcaded round-arched lights, and has a symmetrical facade facing Academy Street. It is built of polished yellow ashlar and is divided into three individually-roofed sections, with the central part set forward and a storey taller than the others. The top storey is set back and features a shallow block pediment topped by a cupola, along with end stacks. The ground level has a triple-arched entrance, and the two-storey outer ranges each contain four lights on each level, with a series of lights on the flanks. The original glazing is still intact.

The building has piended slate roofs. The interior was rebuilt by Thomas Martin in 1908. The playground is enclosed by rock-faced walls and features decorative cast-iron gates and railings.
