Description

The Thomas Fortune Work Centre, located at 50 Garscadden Road in Glasgow, is a single-storey primary school built between 1904 and 1905 in the Glasgow Style. It was converted into residential accommodation in 2005 and 2006. The building is constructed from cream sandstone sourced from Auchinlea Quarry, featuring squared and snecked stonework with ashlar dressings.

The entrance elevation is nearly symmetrical, with advanced lower bays at the center. This area includes two single windows flanked by tripartite windows, and taller stone porches for girls and boys at the re-entrant angles. Each porch has a carved panel above a segmental lintel that supports a broad door with a chamfered reveal, leading to two-leaf panelled doors topped with lead domes. Behind the porches are ashlar stacks, one of which is truncated. The outer bays are recessed and gabled, with three windows on the left and a door with a window on the right.

On the side elevation, there is a broad gabled bay to the left that is slightly advanced and features a single window. The center has a bipartite window with a depressed arch dormer head, while two widely spaced windows are located to the right.

The rear elevation showcases eleven tall timber sash and case windows with plate glass and stylized glazing patterns. The roof is covered with West Highland grey slates and includes generous original rooflights in the entrance pitch, along with coped stacks.

Inside, the front range features a fine open timber roof inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, likely designed by Alan George McNaughtan. This roof includes generous rooflights and corbelled brackets, with dadoed walls throughout.

The gateway consists of square ashlar gatepiers that support two-leaf wrought-iron gates.
