Description

Woodside Public School, located at 311, 313, and 315 Woodlands Road in Glasgow, was designed by architect Robert Dalglish and completed in 1882. This Jacobean style school features a T-plan layout and is built on a sloping site. The building has a symmetrical two-storey elevation facing Woodlands Road, raised on a podium, with ten bays and terminal pavilions arranged in a 3-4-3 configuration. The exterior is constructed of stugged ashlar with polished margins and quoins. All windows are adorned with roll-moulded architraves and aprons, and they include transoms, with some also featuring mullions. The glazing is either plate glass or multi-pane.

The terminal pavilions are shallowly advanced and resemble tower features, with banded pilasters flanking single-light windows that rise to mock square turrets above the eaves. A twin-arch blind arcade is present, topped with a heavy cornice and strapwork pediment, which is flanked by finials. The building includes strings at the cills and lintels, a heavy string course above the ground floor, an eaves cornice, and a deep parapet inscribed with 'School Board of Glasgow'. The pavilions also feature panels of pierced balustrading. The school has axial stacks and slate roofs. The four-bay flanks are similarly detailed, with corniced windows on the ground floor and a pierced parapet on the south flank. The rear elevation includes corniced and pilastered doorpieces near the re-entrant angle, as well as a central projecting bay with a square turret or campanile feature at the eaves, which is similarly detailed with strapwork pediments and finials.

Additionally, the gatepiers and railings consist of square-section ashlar piers with panelled necks and cornices that taper for ball finials. The decorative, heavy cast-iron railings are set on an ashlar dwarf wall along Eldon Street, Woodlands Road, and Park Road.
