Description
St John's Episcopal Church, located on St John Street in Coatbridge, is a rectangular-plan, four-bay church built in 1843. It was re-fronted and the interior was remodeled in the Gothic style by J H O'Donoghue between 1870 and 1871. The main (west) elevation is constructed of ashlar, while the remainder of the building is made of rubble. The west elevation features pointed openings, mostly with hood moulds, and columned jambs with bell capitals. Above the gabled central porch is a three-light window. The church has squat stepped angle buttresses that are unusual for having cast-iron colonnettes at the upper level, which are adorned with foliated capitals made by Messrs Mossman of Glasgow. Pinnacles rise above the gablet skews, and there is an apex cross finial atop the slate roof.
To the east, a vestry and hall adjoin the chancel. The interior chancel, added by O'Donoghue, has a narrow chancel arch supported by engaged columns with foliated capitals. Leaded windows were inserted between 1873 and 1881, including a three-light chancel window by Adam and Small from 1881 and a three-light west window by W & J J Keir from 1879, along with other windows by Keir. The font and pulpit are both stone-built, with the pulpit being octagonal and designed by Kennedy and O'Donoghue. Additionally, there is a low ashlar retaining wall with simple stone piers and iron railings.
