Description
The Whitelaw Memorial Fountain, designed by Hugh H MacLure in 1875, is an ornately carved water fountain made of pink and grey granite. It features a tall square plan and is prominently located at the head of Main Street. The fountain has a tall channelled pedestal with squared corners, an indented cornice, and a chamfered plinth. The pedestal is decorated with banded plain rustication, diamond-pointed rusticated quoins, and circles on the top course. It includes semi-circular pink granite basins with carved lion-head spouts and plaques on each side. The structure is supported by four square Corinthian columns that hold up a pendentive arched canopy, which has modillion keystones and a heavy dentilled cornice leading to an octagonal, carved, scalloped dome above. Fluted urns are placed at the chamfered angles, with a corresponding urn at the apex.
