Description

Glebelands School, located on Lilybank Road in Dundee, was designed by James H. Langlands with assistance from William Gillespie Lamond. Construction began in 1911, but the building was damaged by fire while under construction in 1912 and was rebuilt from 1912 to 1914. The school incorporates elements from a previous building designed by James Ireland and David MacLaren in 1884.

The school is a three-storey structure, showcasing the distinctive Art Nouveau style of Lamond and Harrison Townsend. The south front features twin gables, while the original ground floor detailing and the first-floor cill course have been eroded due to alterations made by Lamond. There is a railed access to the boiler and air intake. The side elevations include stepped mezzanine stair and cloakroom sections, which are flanked by four-light window strips and curvilinear parapets, surrounding classrooms that have bipartite designs with semi-circular dormer heads. A square-section stack projects from the west elevation.

The north elevation features a ground floor playshelter that has been enclosed by a modern dining hall extension, with two tiers of six-light cloakroom windows on the first floor and a gabletted classroom above. The roofs are piended and gabled, covered with slate, and there is a broad-eaved dome-capped ventilator over the central hall, although a similar cap has been removed from the south ventilator. The windows are pivot types with horizontal glazing bars.

The interior of the school has been substantially modernised.
