Taybank Works, 62 Arbroath Road, Dundee

Tay Spinners Ltd, located at Taybank Works on Arbroath Road in Dundee, is a modern jute spinning mill designed by Kenneth F Masson, chief architect of the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society. The building was planned in 1947 and completed in 1949. It is a two-storey structure clad in red brick and faience.

The elevation facing Arbroath Road features a long two-storey façade with a recessed panelled faience section set within a brick surround and topped with a parapet. The ground floor has windows arranged in six groups of three, along with two intermediate loading doors. The first floor boasts continuous large windows divided by seven dark tiled mullions, with three vertically arranged portholes above the door. A tall brick parapet with faience coping is set back and features a stepped-up canted angle. Each elevation includes a two-storey bipartite window within a faience recess, and there is a monumental corner entrance with a deep lintel supported by squat fluted columns over the original double doors. Above this entrance is a deeply recessed window with boldly modelled reveals.

The elevation facing Morgan Street is similar to that on Arbroath Road but is longer and has only six ground floor windows due to the slope of the site. It features eleven large first-floor windows with thicker mullions and two square windows on the right. The original metal-framed hopper windows are still present.

Inside, there is a curved foyer with terrazzo floors. The basement loading area by Arbroath Road is framed with reinforced concrete. The main mill area is a single-storey, steel-framed space that is north-lit.
