Description
Drimla Lodge is a large, two-storey marine villa built in 1896, designed in an H-plan with a tower and verandah. The building features red brick with red ashlar dressings and has a piended red tile roof adorned with terracotta ridge tiles and finials. The ground floor and first-floor verandah windows are designed as two-pane French windows, with fixed multi-pane sashes on top. Other windows follow a similar pattern but operate with conventional sash and case movement. The villa has tall oversailing brick stacks and a three-stage tower that includes a band course at the third stage and a coped pierced parapet. The front elevation showcases a two-leaf door at the center, flanked by windows with leaded stained glass, and features French windows on both sides. The tower is positioned at the left angle, breaking through the eaves and containing windows on all floors.
On the west elevation, there is a recessed bay at the center with three windows on both the ground and first floors, while a bay on the right is advanced and has three windows on the ground floor and one on the first floor, along with a verandah. The left bay is also advanced and features a window on both floors. The east elevation mirrors this with a recessed bay at the center that has a window on the ground floor and three stepped stair windows, an advanced bay on the left with a window on both floors, and another bay on the right with a window on both floors. The rear elevation is plain, with various doors and windows.
Inside, the villa retains original chimneypieces, joinery cornices, and decorative ceilings, along with a well-designed stair featuring turned balusters and newels. The property is also complemented by two cast-iron gatepiers, gates, and adjoining railings, although the railings are partly engulfed by a mature hedge.
