Description
Dippin Lodge is a mid-19th century villa that has been significantly extended in the late 19th century to create an irregular-plan shooting lodge. The original building is constructed of painted, roughly-cut stone with ashlar dressings, a grey slate roof, and features a base course, margined angles with corbels supporting overhanging eaves, corniced stack bases (formerly with octagonal stacks, now with terracotta cans matching the later stacks), and single, two-pane, and three-pane windows with timber sash and case glazing. Some windows have corbelled cills and bracketted cornices, and there are gableheaded dormerheads. The later additions are built of roughly-cut buff and red rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings, a grey slate roof, and mostly feature 12-pane sash and case windows with chamfered jambs. Segmentally-pedimented dormerheads are also present, along with ashlar-coped skewblocks and corniced stacks topped with uniform terracotta cans.
The front elevation has a doorway with a fanlight and sidelights, partially obscured by a flat-roofed porch with a moulded basket-arch doorcase and a corbelled cornice to the re-entrant angle. A small four-pane window sits above the door, and there is a bipartite window to the ground floor to the right, with a dormerhead above. A four-light, corniced, and canted window with a flat roof is slightly advanced within a gable to the left, and a single window is located above it.
The left return elevation shows the original building to the right, featuring a tripartite window to the ground floor and a single dormerhead above. An addition to the left has two windows to the ground floor and two dormerheads above. The right return elevation displays the original gable to the left, with a tapered and stepped outshot chimneybreast in the centre. An addition to the right has a window to the ground floor, two windows to a corbelled first floor, and a very narrow bay to the far right, with windows to both the ground and first floors linking to an advanced gable. An outshot chimneybreast is present on the advanced gable, and there are three windows to the ground and first floors, as well as a dormer to the left return elevation.
The rear elevation has later additions which obscure the original house, comprising a two-storey advanced bay to the left with a door and two windows to the ground floor, and two windows to the first floor. A single-storey bay with a piend roof extends to the right. Two gables are advanced to the far right, connected by a linking section, with various windows. The interior of the lodge has not been inspected.
