Description

Dated 1896, Grange House Hotel is a two-storey and attic villa constructed in an Arts and Crafts style with details reminiscent of 17th-century Scottish architecture. It was built following a fire that destroyed a previous building on the site. The exterior is of snecked rubble cream sandstone with ashlar dressings, topped with a slate roof. The windows are mostly single-paned timber sash and case, with multi-paned glazing throughout or a combination of multi-panes at the top and two-panes at the bottom. Some dormerheads are ball-finialled and segmental. Other decorative elements include ashlar-coped skew blocks, corniced and coped gable and wallhead stacks, deep bracketted eaves, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The front elevation features a two-bay gable to the right, with two windows on both the ground and first floors, and a central stack rising from the first floor. A single-bay gable is on the left, with a window on each of the ground, first and attic floors. A single-storey, three-light, canted window is set at the angle to the left, topped with a corniced parapet and a recessed dormerhead above. A tall L-plan wallhead stack is located at the re-entrant angle. The right return elevations include a lower service wing and various windows on the main wall plane, including a stair window and two dormerheads, one a four-light cat-slide dormer, and two bipartite box dormers. The left return elevation has a window on the ground floor and another on the first floor. The rear elevation has a gable advanced to the left, featuring a door with "Grange House 1896" inscribed above it, two windows, and a dormerhead. Recessed bays to the right include a ground-floor window and two dormerheads, plus a canted dormer, with a tall L-plan wallhead stack to the re-entrant angle. The interior has not been inspected. The property is bounded by rubble boundary walls. This late 19th century villa is noted for its fine decorative detailing, including prominent chimney stacks and distinctive dormerheads, which make a significant contribution to the streetscape of Whiting Bay.
