Description

Burlington House is an Arts and Crafts-style villa dating to around 1905, designed by D Woodburn Sturrock. It is a two-storey and attic structure built of bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings, harl (roughcast) plaster, and a slate roof. The windows are timber sash and case, with single panes at the bottom and multiple panes at the top, some being casements. It features bracketted eaves, corniced ashlar and harled stacks topped with uniform terracotta cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The front elevation has a recessed central bay containing a door flanked by windows, with a slated canopy above the door. A four-light window is situated on the first floor, with two central lights breaking through the eaves. A dormer window is also present. To the left, a gable advances, featuring a four-light canted window with a flat roof and a rounded corner on the ground floor. To the right, another gable advances, with a tripartite window on the ground floor and a rounded gable to the left, with a harled first floor and a tripartite window.

The left return elevation has a masonry bay to the right containing a single window at ground floor. The rest is harled, with a bipartite window. A first-floor window is accompanied by a gabled dormerhead and a stack to the left. The right return elevation is similar to the left, but in a mirror image.

The interior of the house has seen little alteration. To the rear of the main building is a single-storey and attic harled “summer house.” The property is enclosed by three coped ashlar gate piers and saddleback-coped rubble and snecked rubble boundary walls. Burlington House is now a hotel. Details of the building were published in Academy Architecture in 1905.
