Description

Whiting Bay Primary School, designed by Baron Bercott and Associates, was built between 1963 and 1967 and extended in 1978. Located on the east coast of Arran, it overlooks the Firth of Clyde towards the mainland. The main entrance is at the rear. This single-storey Late Modern school features a row of three pitched-roof classrooms, each interspersed with slightly advanced white triangular sections at ground level. These classrooms are connected by a flat-roofed corridor with narrow window openings, leading to a tall, monopitched-roof section to the north that includes low horizontal glazing. The building is finished with concrete render, decorated with timber boarding at the gables and below the window openings, and has an orange metal roof covering the classrooms. A right-angled triangular section at the south serves as a play-shelter.

The flat-roofed extension to the southwest, which houses the library and an additional classroom, was added in 1978.

The school features a variety of window types, including plate-glass fixed windows, casement windows, and bottom-opening windows.

As of 2015, the interior layout largely retains its original design from 1967 and 1978. A corridor runs along the rear with entrances to the classrooms, while the dining hall is located at the north end of the building. Offices are situated between the classrooms and the dining hall. The corridor ceiling is finished with timber boarding and includes regularly spaced skylights. The dining hall features timber boarding in the serving area and a high, narrow angled area in front of it. The classrooms are irregularly shaped internally, reflecting their external diamond shape, with two classrooms equipped with low sinks.
