Description

Cardinal Newman High School is a large, late Modernist secondary school constructed between 1972 and 1977 for the Lanarkshire Education Authority, initially designed by Richard Cannon. The school occupies an open landscape near a residential area and Strathclyde Country Park, with the main access being across a bridge over a railway line to the north.

The building is arranged around a centralised, segmental plan radiating from a metal-clad substation with glazed upper sections. A main four-storey teaching block curves around the substation, forming a semi-ellipse. This block features a raked-angle concrete frame and glazed curtain walls that slope outwards, set within metal grid frames. The south-facing curve of the block is emphasised by four projecting stair towers, and raised external walkways provide entrances at the two central stair towers. The ends of the teaching block are trapezoidal and clad in red-brown engineering brick. Science, engineering, technical, games hall, theatre, and music blocks are linked to the main teaching block, stepping down in height towards the perimeter of the plan. These outlying blocks are primarily of red brick, with splayed plans, sloped glazed sections, and metal-clad roofs.

The internal structural framework remains visible, showcasing girder roof structures and exposed brick and blockwork, creating a simplified but cohesive aesthetic. Corridors near the outlying blocks are lit by ribbon glazed top-lights. On the ground floor of the teaching block, the space is divided into four year-group areas, each with dedicated dining halls and colour-coded communal spaces. Classrooms are located on the third floor, while the art department occupies the fourth floor. A training kitchen and restaurant area adjacent to the reception offers views over the games hall, with access to a viewing balcony. Planters are incorporated into the window cills throughout the main circulation areas.

A detached annex to the northeast of the school, called Willowbank, is not considered to be of special architectural or historic interest and is excluded from the listing.
