Description

Bothwell Park House is a late 18th-century dower house, possibly designed by James Playfair, with later alterations and additions. It is a symmetrical, rectangular 2-storey building with an attic, set within grounds with associated buildings. The main house is three bays wide, with lower wings set back and a full-height, three-light canted bay at the centre. It is constructed of droved grey sandstone ashlar, with snecked cream sandstone ashlar to the wings and harled to the rear. Polished ashlar dressings are present, along with a base course, cill course to the ground floor, a band course between ground and first floor on the canted bay and to the left of centre, a reeded frieze to the cornice, and a blocking course. Raised, moulded margins define the windows, and cornices adorn the ground floor windows. A modern, single-story conservatory/swimming pool extension, added in 1991, projects from the southwest side of the main house.

The principal (south-east) elevation features a pilastered and pedimented doorpiece at the centre of the canted bay, with a replacement two-leaf timber panelled door and a rectangular fanlight. Above the door is a first-floor window featuring a carved heraldic shield and a Latin inscription. Windows are regularly spaced on both floors, flanking the canted bay. To the right of the bay is a box dormer window. A wing set back to the outer right has windows on both floors, and a round-arched kennel sits within the re-entrant angle. A slightly projecting three-light window is present in the wing to the left.

The northwest (rear) elevation is irregularly fenestrated, with bays flanking the central canted bay. The ground floor window of the canted bay was originally a doorway but is now converted. A single-storey, circular-plan corniced entrance porch is set into the angle to the right, featuring a modern timber panelled door with a fanlight and flanking windows; a window is blinded above. Windows are spaced on both floors in the various bays. The rear swimming pool addition is visible at the outer right. The additional wing to the outer left also has windows on both floors.

The northeast and southwest side elevations are also irregularly fenestrated, with tall stacks. Some windows on the northeast side of the main house have been blinded.

The interior was not inspected in 1997, but previous photographs revealed a classically detailed interior. The building has predominantly 12- and 6-pane timber sash and case windows, with some uPVC replacements. The roof is grey slate, piended in form, with flat felt-covered roofs to the additional wings. Corniced ashlar stacks are characteristic of both the main house and wings, and cast-iron rainwater goods are in place. A U-plan timber stable block and a square-plan shed are located to the northeast of the main house.
