Description

Balwearie High School, Balwearie Gardens

A late-Modernist secondary school designed by the Fife County Education Architect's Department between 1960 and 1964, with Gavin H McConnell as project architect and lead designer. An extension to the north was added in 1975, designed by Gavin McConnell for Fife Regional Council Architectural Services. The school occupies a large triangular site to the south of Beveridge Park in Kirkcaldy.

The complex follows a centralised, modular block plan. A long four-storey central block (C Block) runs on a north-south axis and forms the spine of the building. Its concrete frame is supported on concrete pilotis at ground floor, with glazed curtain-walls above. The recessed ground floor section is clad in squared and snecked rubble. The fenestration follows a modular pattern interrupted by cut-out infill panels of concrete and aggregate cement between horizontal glazed bands. Large panels mark each floor on the east and west elevations, reflecting the position of internal stairs. The parapet to the roof is pierced. On the flat roof sit a large drum-shaped classroom and a curvilinear observation tower. Wave-form motif seating is positioned underneath the pilotis. Some signage from the 1960s remains.

To the east, the auditorium block is single storey with a square plan. It features circular steel columns behind a full-height glazed curtain-wall to the north, returning along the west elevation. The eastern elevation is clad in squared and snecked sandstone rubble. 1960s signage appears on the north elevation. A pond to the north incorporates a concrete wave-form motif.

To the south, a raised linking corridor passes through the square-plan library block (L Block) and connects to four inter-connected stepped-plan classroom blocks (J Block). This arrangement takes advantage of the naturally sloping site. All have squared and snecked rubble bases. Narrow square-plan pilotis support a recessed exterior walkway at ground level. The upper classroom levels feature irregular cut-out fenestration.

To the west, T Block is square-plan with squared and snecked rubble to the ground floor and base. A linking corridor connects it to the west elevation of C Block.

Interior spaces demonstrate quality materials and close attention to design detail. The entrance hall and foyer feature marble floor tiles and double-door partitions. The double-height foyer includes a raised gallery walkway on two sides and a full-height, twisting concrete mullions supporting a large curtain window with asymmetrical colour-blocks and timber panelling. Some cantilevered staircases are present. A barrel-vaulted ceiling runs through the linking corridor between C Block and the Assembly Hall. The Assembly Hall itself has an undulating geometric ceiling and full-height timber-panel walls with curved corners at the stage end. Alternating steps lead to a raised timber control platform at the rear with irregular cut-outs. Polished brass handrails and fittings, together with polished parquet flooring, complete the finishes. The library features a raised timber mezzanine level. Classroom doors are timber with glazed margin lights. Geometric patterned tiles finish all principal corridors.
