5 Balwearie Road, Kirkcaldy

5 Balwearie Road in Kirkcaldy is a single-storey and attic pair of houses designed by Swanston & Syme in 1905. These houses have a long T-plan layout and feature a mirrored design with mock half-timbered M-gables. The exterior is constructed from bull-faced, squared and snecked red rubble, complemented by red sandstone ashlar dressings at the ground level and contrasting harl above. Notable architectural elements include a part string course, deeply overhanging eaves, and decorative bargeboarding.

The northwest (principal) elevation is symmetrical, showcasing a broad, advanced central gable that houses two corniced, tripartite bow windows. These are flanked by small windows with coloured glass, and above, there are two quadripartite windows with lintels that meet the jettied half-timbered gablehead. The flanking recessed bays are identical, each featuring a canted porch and a part-glazed two-leaf timber door with flanking lights in the re-entrant angles, along with a tiny window above and another window in the outer bays.

The southwest elevation consists of a gabled single bay with an advanced tripartite window and a swept, tiled roof, beneath which is another tripartite window with a lintel that meets the jettied half-timbered gable. The northeast elevation mirrors the southwest elevation.

The windows are timber sash and case with small-pane glazing patterns. The building features tall, battered, cavetto-coped harled stacks with cans, and cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers.
