Description

Forrester Memorial Manse, located at 83 Milton Road in Kirkcaldy, is a 2-storey, 3-bay gabled manse built in 1894 by architects Gillespie and Scott, with alterations made by J D Swanston in 1928-1929 and further modifications in 1964. The building features a rectangular plan and is constructed from stugged ashlar, squared sandstone rubble, and polished quoins. It has a deep base course, part string course, first-floor cill courses, and an eaves cornice. The openings include basket-, segmental-, and round-arched designs with chamfered reveals, voussoirs, stone transoms, and mullions.

On the south elevation, the main entrance consists of a moulded, deep-set basket-arched doorway with a broad part-glazed boarded timber door. To the right of the doorway is a small round-headed window with trefoil detail. This section is framed by a string course and first-floor cill course, which also encloses a downpipe and features a carved floreate panel with an inscription. To the left, there is a bipartite window, and to the right, a tripartite window is set in a recessed bay. The first-floor centre bay has a bipartite window in a round-arched surround, with a tympanum inscribed 'RAITH MANSE, ERECTED TO THE BELOVED MEMORY OF JOHN FORRESTER, 18...96', and a small gable above. There are additional bipartite windows in small gables to the left and right.

The west elevation has one window at the centre and two windows to the left on the ground floor, with another window in the centre at the first floor within a stepped chimney gable. The north elevation features asymmetrical fenestration with a piended dormer window in the lower bay to the right. The east elevation includes a chimney gable with a window at the centre on each floor.

The windows primarily have a 9-pane glazing pattern over plate glass and are made of timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks with cans, as well as ashlar-coped skews with flat skewputts. The building has cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers.

Inside, the manse was modernised in 1964 but retains a staircase with boarded balusters, fielded timber newels with ball finials, and an architraved vestibule door.

The boundary walls consist of low saddleback-coped walls to the south and semi-circular-coped rubble walls elsewhere.
