Description

The Town Hall in Forres was originally designed by Archibald Simpson between 1827 and 1829 and was later refronted by John Forrest from 1899 to 1901. This classical building is constructed of ashlar and features two storeys with three bays, where the central bay is slightly advanced and topped with a pediment. On the ground floor, the central bay contains an entrance framed by coupled Roman Doric columns, with coupled Roman Doric pilasters at the ends, all supporting a full entablature. The ground floor openings are round-arched and keyblocked, with raised voussoirs at the entrance. The first floor showcases the Ionic order, featuring a Venetian window in the center and consoled pedimented windows in the outer bays, all with balustered aprons. The building is finished with a cornice and balustrade.

Inside, the Town Hall was remodeled between 1899 and 1901 but retains some original features from 1827 to 1829. It has a simple entrance hall that leads to a central top-lit foyer, which preserves detailing from the earlier period. The walls are shallow and pilastered with composite capitals, and there are paired Ionic fluted columns to the east, which were part of a former screen. The ceiling is coffered, and some doors feature Greek key-pattern decoration. There is also a large inner hall that has been remodeled.
