Anderson's Institution, 2 Institution Road, Elgin

Anderson's Institution, located at 2 Institution Road in Elgin, was designed by Archibald Simpson between 1830 and 1833 in the Greek Revival style. This large, two-storey building features an H-plan main range with a school to the south. The front (north) facade is made of polished ashlar, while the flanks are finished with finely tooled ashlar and polished ashlar dressings. The main elevation consists of 14 bays, with the outer three bays being advanced and topped with a pediment. The centre of the facade features an Ionic portico, which is distyle in antis and includes a frieze, cornice, and a block pediment that supports sculptured figures. Behind the pediment, there is a circular domed cupola set back on a square plinth, adorned with eight Corinthian pilasters between louvred openings.

The west elevation has seven bays, with the second and sixth bays being advanced and featuring a hexastyle Roman Doric portico in between. The building includes lying-pane glazing, corniced stacks, and a shallow piended slate roof.

Inside, there is a domed and pilastered entrance hall with a coffered ceiling, as well as a plain staircase. The property is also marked by a pair of single monolith panelled gatepiers, which have square copes with an egg and dart frieze, and cast-iron railings. The garden walls are constructed from coursed rubble with dressed copes.
