Description
St Leonard's Church, located on High Street in Forres, was built between 1901 and 1903 in the Decorated Gothic style. The exterior features coursed tooled rubble with ashlar dressings. The large gable facing High Street has triple entrances that are divided by cluster colonnettes topped with stiff leaf capitals. Above these entrances are triple geometric traceried windows, and the gable is adorned with a parapet that has heavy quatrefoil decoration.
To the left of the main entrance is a bowed wing that houses the gallery stairs, which are lit by cusped lancet windows. To the right, there is a three-stage tower with a battered base, lancet windows, and corbelled angle turrets at the upper stage, topped with a crenellated parapet and a facetted spire featuring lucarnes at its base. The church body has five bays, with paired cusped windows on both the ground floor and the gallery, and is covered by a steeply pitched slate roof.
Inside, the church has a U-plan gallery with cusped Gothic panelling at the front, supported by six cluster cast-iron columns with bulbous florid capitals. There is a Gothic panelled pulpit and organ case, and the roof is of the hammer beam type, boarded and panelled. The windows feature chequered glazing. Additionally, there is a church hall located at the rear.
