Description
Hopeman Lodge is a 2-storey, 5-bay house facing south, consisting of three distinct construction phases. The original part, built around 1810, is a simple single-storey, 3-bay structure with set-back wings. A rear extension, which includes a coach house and raised ground floor drawing and dining rooms, was added by William Robertson around 1830. The building was later remodelled and raised to two storeys over a raised basement by R B Pratt between 1911 and 1912. The exterior features harled walls with tooled and polished ashlar margins.
The front of the house has five bays, with the outer bays advanced as wings. The central entrance is concealed by a porch added in 1911-12, which is approached by a flight of steps and features a round-headed doorway with a radial fanlight, as well as open pedimented and pilastered detailing. The first floor has a tripartite window from 1911-12, with lights divided by Doric columns, and the upper windows are linked by a continuous lintel-eaves band.
At the rear, the fenestration is symmetrical with three bays. The former wide carriage house entrance was blocked in 1911-12, and a plaque with the Gordon-Duff motto was inserted in the centre of the raised ground floor. The windows have 2-pane glazing. The roof features paired coped ridge stacks and shallow piended slate roofs. A service court extends to the east, enclosed by a coped wall.
Inside, the building has been converted into holiday flats. A notable feature is a white marble chimneypiece with cusped detailing in the rear sitting room, dating from around 1840.
