Summerhouse, Glenarch, Gilmerton Road, Dalkeith

The summerhouse at Glenarch, located on Gilmerton Road in Dalkeith, dates from around 1890 and is designed in a picturesque, rustic Arts and Crafts style. It is built into the garden wall adjacent to the river to the east of Glenarch House. The structure features four tree trunk columns that support a loggia with a timber-framed central gable. Below the central area, there is a window facing the river, flanked by two rooms that each have canted fronts and leaded pane windows with stained glass roundels. The roof has a complex structure covered with red tiles, and there are leaded flat sections over the loggia on either side. The rear wall is made of ashlar and has large ball finials at the end gables that adjoin the garden wall, with a doorway leading to the river on the right.
