Description
Dated 1797, Elginhaugh Bridge is a triple segmental-arched bridge built for turnpike road purposes, now carrying the A7 road over the River North Esk. The central arch spans the river, flanked by two smaller arches over the banks, all with curved ashlar abutments. The bridge is constructed of cream sandstone rubble with polished ashlar parapets. The arch voussoirs, soffits, and abutments are of stugged ashlar. Tapered, channelled buttresses are set into the piers, and triangular-plan cutwaters flank the central arch. Further buttressed piers are located beside the outer arches, with a terminal pier at the northern end. A cavetto-moulded string course runs above the archrings, and a band course sits below the parapet. Square ashlar copes finish the parapets. A corniced rectangular date panel is positioned above the central arch on the northeastern side. Records from 1794 indicate the bridge's construction was approved due to sufficient funds within the Turnpike Trustees' accounts. The bridge appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1854.
