Description

The East Gate-Lodge at Melville Castle dates from the earlier 19th century, with gatepiers that may be from the late 18th century. This single-storey lodge is designed in an asymmetrical L-plan and reflects the style of architect William Burn, featuring crowstepped gables. There is a later addition at the rear re-entrant angle and a garage to the outer left. The lodge is constructed from cream ashlar sandstone with polished ashlar dressings on the front, while the rear addition is made of grey ashlar sandstone. It includes a base course, a cornice, and a blocking course to the canted bay on the left, as well as hood moulds over the door and windows, and strip quoins.

On the northwest (entrance) elevation, there is a hood-moulded doorpiece leading to a square-plan porch located at the center of the re-entrant angle, featuring a replacement timber door and a crowstepped gablet above. A bipartite window is set back in the bay to the left, while a projecting, 3-light canted window is in the advanced bay to the right, topped with a crowstepped gable. A timber garage is set back to the outer left.

The southeast (rear) elevation has an advanced, 2-bay addition at the re-entrant angle, with a window in each bay and a modern door on the left return. There is a bipartite window in the bay of the short arm of the original block, also topped with a crowstepped gable. A lean-to timber garage is located to the outer left.

The windows throughout the lodge are timber sash and case, featuring 12, 4, and 8 panes. The roof is covered with grey slate, while the additions have flat roofs. There are ashlar coped and corbelled diamond gablehead stacks to the southwest and an ashlar coped diamond stack at the angle. The building also has ashlar crowsteps and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The gatepiers and quadrant walls consist of four square-plan cream ashlar sandstone piers, each with a moulded cornice and pyramidal cap, connected by decorative wrought-iron links. The quadrant walls are made of cream ashlar sandstone with moulded ashlar coping.
