King's Gate, Dalkeith House

William Burn and David Bryce, 1852. Gateway to Dalkeith Estate from Old Dalkeith Road (A68), with screen walls, and lodge to NE.

KING'S GATE: tripartite gateway; 2 taller gatepiers at centre linked to 2 outer piers by screen walls, each with pedestrian gateway. Ashlar. Base course. Bracketted cornice to nailhead rusticated piers; surmounted by large floreated urns. Lugged architraves to pedestrian gateways, with coroneted shield inscribed "BQ"; moulded coping to screen walls. Highly decorative wrought-ironwork to 2-leaf semicircular-arched gates at centre, surmounted by decorative scroll-work, and to pedestrian gates.

QUADRANT WALLS: tall walls, curved to SE and SW. Stugged ashlar; moulded coping. Base course. Chamfered pier to each side, with bracketted cornice and massive ball finials. Saddleback-coped squared and coursed rubble wall beyond piers.

LODGE: single storey and attic, with raised basement to E on falling ground, asymmetrical gabled lodge. Cream sandstone ashlar. Deep base course. Moulded reveals and chamfered cills to ashlar transomed and moullioned bipartite windows to W, N and S. Chamfered reveals to single light windows to E. Mannered buckle quoins. Overhanging eaves; scrolled bargeboarding to W and N with kingposts.

W (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: 3-bay arcaded porch as loggia to left, in re-entrant angle formed by gabled bay advanced to right. Shouldered openings and corniced pierced balustrade to porch; steps up to gabled entrance bay to outer left, with moulded panel in gablehead. 2-leaf boarded door to centre, with cast-iron hinges; window to left. Canted window at ground in advanced bay to right, with ashlar half-piend roof and cornice continuous with moulded string course; attic window at 1st floor. Window to left return. Screen wall, with boarded door, adjoined to right and adjoined to outer gatepier to E.

N ELEVATION: gabled wing advanced to right; canted window at ground, with ashlar half-piend roof and cornice continuous with moulded string course; attic window at 1st floor. Window to left; single light window at basement.

E ELEVATION: asymmetrically gabled, with irregularly disposed windows. Boarded door at centre at basement. Squared and snecked rubble single storey and basementwind adjoined to left.

S ELEVATION: single storey and basement L-plan block advanced to right; courtyard formed to left with screen walls. Window at ground and gabled dormerheaded window breaking eaves to left; later leaded gabled dormer window to right.

Large square-pane glazing pattern in sash windows, some lying-pane. Graded grey-green slates to steeply pitched roof. 2 rendered coped ridge stacks, stop-chamfered and incised. Moulded eaves gutter. Original rainwater goods.
