Description

This is an early 19th-century iron mill, now converted into residential use. It stands within the larger Ironmills complex, with other buildings within the complex listed separately. The building comprises a 3-storey and attic main block, a block to the south, a single-storey and attic wing to the east, and a single-storey wing to the north, which connects to the Miller’s House (listed separately). Modern additions are present to the south. The building is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings. Raised margins define the 4-centred arched openings, although many have been replaced. Moulded angle margins incorporate corniced detail.

The west elevation is two bays wide and features regularly disposed windows, with larger openings at ground level. A half-vesica is set in the gablehead, flanked by two small blind oculi. A modern rubble wall with a forestair has been attached to the right side.

The south elevation shows a gabled block, with a separate roof, abutting the main block to the right. Modern rubble and glazed additions occupy the ground floor, marking the former site of a lean-to wheel-house, and extend to the first and second floors in the re-entrant angle to the left. A window is located at the second floor to the left, and a sloped door is at the first floor to the outer left. A small oculus is situated at the second floor centre. A window is also found at the second floor centre on the west return, above the modern additions. The block to the south is two bays wide; a doorway is positioned in the right bay at ground floor with a short replacement flight of steps. The first floor window in the left bay is out of alignment. A half-vesica is within the gablehead. A blocked opening is visible at basement level to the left (a similar opening originally existed to the right, but is now hidden by the forestair). Bull blocks are present at both basement and ground levels on the left side.

The east elevation has a three-storey block to the left with a single fenestrated bay. A blocked opening at basement level is present to the right, with bull blocks to the right. An advanced single-storey, attic, and basement gabled block abuts the blank gable of the main block, which is recessed to the right. A window is visible on the south return, flanked by a small oculus to the right, and a blocked opening is at basement level to the left. A small window is in the gablehead, and a machinery door is slapped at basement level to the left on the east elevation.

The north elevation features a four-step entrance to the recessed block on the outer left, flanked by a window to the left. The fenestration is regularly disposed in two bays to the right. A blocked opening is visible at basement level to the right. The single-storey wing projects to the right, linking the iron mill to the Miller’s House. A basement door and relieving arch are on the east return, flanked by a slit to the right, and a window at ground floor to the left. A window is on the west elevation, with a small oculus above.

The original windows retain a 10-lying-pane glazing pattern. Coped skews are present, along with coped stacks to the west, south, and east gables. The roof is covered in grey slates.
