Description
Elm Lodge, located at 40 Eskbank Road in Dalkeith, is an L-plan villa built in the earlier to mid-19th century. The villa is two stories high and has three bays. The east elevation features finely chiselled and textured ashlar stone, while the other elevations are made of rubble with ashlar dressings. It includes a base course, a band course between the floors, and an eaves course. The stonework has droved margin drafts and angle margins, with raised cills and rusticated quoins on the west elevation.
On the east elevation facing Eskbank Road, there is a door at the center with a lugged architrave, a panelled door, and a fanlight with a margined glazing pattern. The windows are regularly spaced on both the ground and first floors, with the ground floor windows being taller.
The west elevation features a piended jamb to the right, a two-leaf garden door with a timber porch to the right, and a window to the left on the first floor. There is a window to the right on the ground floor and another to the left on the first floor of the north return. The elevation is mostly blank with a blocked window above a brick lean-to addition, which has a door to the north and three windows to the west.
On the south elevation, there is a window to the right of center on the ground floor, and two windows on the first floor, one to the left and one in the center. The north elevation is blank above a range of adjoining outbuildings that run north.
The villa features sash and case windows with a 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered in grey slates and has shouldered wallhead stacks, with a corniced stack to the right of center on the south side, a rendered and lined stack at the center of the north side, and a partially rendered and lined stack at the center of the west jamb. The original chimney cans are still present.
Inside, there is a cast-iron balustrade on the staircase.
The outbuildings consist of a range of single-storey structures attached to the north elevation, recessed to the right from the east elevation. The left side is made of rubble, with a door flanked by 12-pane windows on the left and cart doors with two windows above on the right. There is a brick stable on the right, which includes a door, a window, two stalls, and guttering. A garage is incorporated to the right.
The boundary walls and gateway consist of an ashlar saddleback coped rubble wall, with a gabled ashlar overthrow at the pedestrian gateway that has a lintel inscribed "Elm Lodge" and two carriage piers.
