Description

Alloway Mill is an early 19th century, three-story and attic, nine-bay former mill, now converted into a house and stables. The building is constructed of rubble.

The northwest elevation, which serves as the main entrance, is arranged in a group of four bays, two bays, and three bays. The second floor has regularly spaced windows. At ground floor, a bay to the outer left features two glazed cartshed openings. An entrance and a window above are positioned off-centre within the inner bay to the left; a gabled projection to the right has a glazed timber door, a single window, and a window aligned above the main block. A mill wheel is located in the bay to the outer right. There is glazing above. The advanced, gabled section has regular two-window fenestration on all floors, with a single attic window in the gablehead. The re-entrant angle to the right has single window fenestration at each floor, whilst the re-entrant angle to the left also has single window fenestration at the first and second floors. The three bays to the outer right have regular fenestration to all floors, with a glazed entrance porch at ground floor to the central bay; a larger opening at upper floor to the outer left and an attic above. Timber framing surrounds the building.

The southeast elevation, the rear, is arranged in a group of three bays, two bays, and four bays. The left side has regular fenestration on all floors, except for a glazed entrance porch at ground floor to the bay to the outer left, which also has an additional window. The advanced gabled section has regular two-window fenestration on all floors, with a single attic window in the gablehead. A glazed timber door replaces a window at ground floor to the right. A glazed timber door and single windows are located at the first and second floors to the re-entrant angle to the left. Single windows are present on all floors to the re-entrant angle to the right. The second floor has regularly spaced windows, and two non-aligned windows are positioned at ground and first floor level below each bay, with exceptions (no first floor window to the bay to the outer right and a window to the inner bay to the left at ground, within a lean-to).

The southwest elevation has a single window to the right at ground floor, and two single windows at the first and second floors. The northeast elevation was not visible in 1999.

The building has a variety of glazing patterns, predominantly fixed timber windows at ground floor. The roof is covered in grey slate, with stone skews, coped wallhead stacks, and circular cans. Cast iron rainwater goods are also present.

The interior was not visible in 1999.

An ancillary structure, with a gabled form, is located on the northeast side. It has a timber door to a square-headed entrance on the left, two cartshed openings to the right, and a small opening at the outer right.

A short stretch of blocked balustraded walling forms the entrance boundary wall.
