Description

32-36 Main Street in Gorebridge is a pair of shops with tenements above, built in 1889. The building is two stories high and has a rectangular plan with five bays. It is constructed from coursed stugged sandstone, featuring droved dressings and stop-chamfered details on the first floor. The design includes long and short quoins, a base course, and a dividing band course.

The principal elevation faces southeast and is symmetrical. It has a central shop window with a shouldered design, which is repeated in the outer bays on both sides. There are round arched doorways with keystones in the second and fourth bays, leading to two-leaf timber panelled doors. Above these doors, a central segmental arched window features a keystone and a cill supported by two stone brackets. On either side of this window are square carved panels that read "JP" and "1889." The outer bays have bipartite segmental arched windows, also with cills supported by stone brackets.

The northeast and southwest elevations are obscured by the adjacent terrace, and the northwest elevation was not visible in 1997. The ground floor has two-pane timber fixed shop windows, while the first floor features two-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a terracotta ridge, stone skews, cast iron rainwater goods, and polished stone coped gablehead stacks with circular cans.
