Description

42-44 Albert Road in Gourock is a pre-1856, two-storey and attic, four-bay double villa featuring classical architectural details. The building is constructed from yellow sandstone with an ashlar front, coursed and squared stugged rubble on the sides, and coursed rubble at the rear. It has a tall base course, a dividing band course above the ground floor, an eaves cornice with an ashlar parapet, rusticated quoins, and basket-arched windows with recessed aprons on the principal floor.

The front elevation is symmetrical, with round-arched doorways in the central bays accessed by steps, each topped with consoled cornices. The fenestration is regular, featuring a canted dormer on the right and a modern box dormer on the left.

The northwest elevation has a gable with windows in the centre and right bay. The southwest elevation is also gabled and includes a later brick-built forestair in the centre and windows on the left. The southeast (rear) elevation features a semicircular stair tower, originally part of a pair, on the right with a small brick-built privy added, and a small lean-to addition on the left.

Most windows are timber sash and case with plate glass glazing, though some modern replacements and 12-pane windows can be found at the rear. The roof is slate, with a gablehead stack on the southwest side.

The front has a low rubble wall, while taller boundary walls are present at the rear and sides. The interior was not seen in 1993.
