Description
These are a group of mid-19th century dwellings located on a corner plot at the junction of Wick Road (A9) and Main Street in Lybster. The principal block is a tall, two-storey and attic terrace comprising four two-bay houses. They are built of coursed rubble with tooled dressings, and feature four canted bay windows facing west towards Main Street. A further, slightly later range of two two-storey and attic, four-bay dwellings adjoins the main terrace to the south, with one incorporating paired shop windows on the ground floor. Each house has three gabled dormers with finials breaking the roofline. Surviving windows include some 12-pane sashes, and there are long, narrow stair windows to the rear. Chimneys rise from the ridge and end walls, and the roofs are slate covered.
A mid-19th century row of single-storey service cottages stands nearby, with their north gable facing the A9. This row features seven bays, two doors, and a large garage door within the southern bay. These cottages are also built of rubble with end and ridge stacks, and have Caithness slate roofs.
A slightly later two-storey, four-bay range sits on the corner plot. This building was not shown on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1871.
