Description
These are a group of mid-19th century dwellings located on a corner site at the junction of Wick Road (A9) and Main Street in Lybster. The complex includes a tall, two-storey and attic terrace, and a row of service cottages.
The main terrace comprises four two-bay dwellings, with four projecting canted bays facing west onto Main Street. This section returns to Wick Road with a four-bay frontage. A later, slightly different section of two two-storey and attic, four-bay dwellings abuts the original terrace to the south, with one having paired shop windows on the ground floor. Each house features three gabled dormers with finials that break the wallhead. The buildings are constructed of coursed rubble with tooled dressings. Some original 12-pane windows remain, as do long, narrow rear stair windows. There are ridge and end stacks, and a slate roof.
A mid-19th century row of single-storey service cottages runs parallel to the A9, with its north gable facing the road. This row has seven bays, two doorways, and a large garage door in the end (south) bay. It is similarly constructed of rubble, with end and ridge stacks, and a Caithness slate roof.
A slightly later two-storey, four-bay range appears on the corner site, and was not shown on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1871.
