Description
This is a group of mid-19th century dwellings situated on a corner plot at the junction of Wick Road (A9) and Main Street in Lybster. The main group consists of four two-storey and attic terrace houses arranged at an angle. They are built of coursed rubble with tooled dressings. Four two-bay sections project, with canted forms facing west towards Main Street, and the terrace continues along Wick Road with a four-bay frontage. A further, slightly later range of two two-storey and attic, four-bay dwellings abuts the original terrace to the south. One of these later houses has shop windows incorporated into the ground floor. Each house features three gabled dormers with finials breaking the roofline. Some original 12-pane windows remain, along with long, narrow rear stair windows. The roof is slate covered, with ridge and end stacks.
To the north, set back from the A9, is a mid-19th century row of single-storey service cottages, with seven bays and two doorways. A large garage door is situated in the end, or south, bay. These cottages are also built of rubble, with end and ridge stacks, and a Caithness slate roof.
A slightly later two-storey, four-bay range sits on the corner plot and was not depicted on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1871.
