Description
These are a group of mid-19th century dwellings located at the corner of Wick Road (A9) and Main Street in Lybster. The property, known as Lybster Quatre Bras, comprises several distinct ranges of buildings.
The main element is a tall, two-storey and attic terrace of four two-bay dwellings, with four canted bay windows facing west onto Main Street. A further four two-bay, two-storey and attic dwellings return to Wick Road, creating a four-bay frontage. The southern gable of the Main Street range abuts closely. A slightly later range of two two-storey, four-bay dwellings connects to this, one of which incorporates paired shop windows on the ground floor. Each house features three gabled dormers with finials projecting from the roofline. Original 12-pane glazing remains in some windows, and long, narrow stair windows are visible at the rear. The roofs are slate-covered, with chimneys positioned along the ridge and ends of the buildings.
A mid-19th century row of single-story service cottages runs alongside the A9, with its north gable facing the road. This row is seven bays wide, with two doorways. A large garage door is set into the southern bay. The cottages are constructed of rubble with slate roofing, and have end and ridge chimneys.
The slightly later two-storey, four-bay range on the corner site does not appear on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1871.
