Description
These are a group of mid-19th century dwellings located on a corner plot where the Wick Road (A9) meets Main Street in Lybster. The main terrace comprises four two-storey and attic houses with two bays each. The houses are constructed of coursed rubble stone with tooled dressings. Four canted bay windows face west towards Main Street, with the terrace returning to Wick Road and presenting a further four-bay frontage. A closely abutting, slightly later range of two two-storey and attic houses, each with four bays, adjoins the south gable facing Main Street; one of these houses features paired shop windows on the ground floor. Each house has three gabled dormers with finials that break the wallhead. Some original 12-pane windows remain, along with long, narrow stair windows at the rear, and ridge and end stacks. The roofs are covered in slate.
A mid-19th century row of single-storey service cottages runs alongside the A9, with their north gable facing the road. The row consists of seven bays, with two doorways, and a large garage door in the end (south) bay. The cottages are built of rubble stone with end and ridge stacks and a Caithness slate roof.
A slightly later two-storey, four-bay range on the corner plot does not appear on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1871.
